OFFERING OF LETTERS
“Putting our faith into action with compassion to benefit all of God’s people”
BREAD FOR THE WORLD: HAVE FAITH. END HUNGER
Along with thousands of other churches, Westminster is a covenanting church with Bread for the World, seeking God's message for us regarding our hungry neighbors through our worship and study, our working and giving, and our daily living. Westminster's Outreach Ministry Team will continue to give prominence to the needs of the poor and hungry people and remind one another that what God requires of us is simply to "do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God."
On Sunday, April 20, 2008, we held our third annual Offering of Letters. Members and friends of all ages joined together with people of faith and conscience all over the country to urge our nation's elected officials to fulfill their promises to the hungry and poor people. This year Bread for the World is calling on Congress to provide more funding for anti-poverty assistance - an increase of at least $5 billion, which would be invested in agriculture, education, and health care.
We urged our representatives to provide more and better assistance to developing countries, and asked Congress to pass the Global Poverty Act. This historic legislation would coordinate U. S. assistance so that the greatest possible benefit is most effectively reaching those in greatest need. In our worship services, we dedicated many letters, asking God to bless the offering of letters to be used for the honor of His name and for the creation of a just society.
“But Lord, when did we see you hungry?...Verily I say to you, what you do for the least of these, you do for me.” (Matthew 25:37,40)
